Letter to the reader of Spottiswoode's Practicks .

[{i}Title page:{/i}] Practicks of the Laws of Scotland, observed and collected by Sir Robert Spotiswoode of Pentland, President of the College of Justice and Secretary of State to King Charles I, as also Abstracts taken out of the Ancient Records of this Kingdom, whereby is declared the Manner of Administring Justice in Civil Causes, before the College of Justice was erected, and Propositions and Questions in Law made by the same Author. With Memoirs of his Life and Trial ... 1646. Publish'd by John Spotiswoode of that-ilk, Advocate, the Author's Grand-son. Edinburgh: printed by James Watson ... 1706 [{i}copy at Aberdeen, UL, shelfmark pi f 34702 Spo 1.2{/i}].

The author's grandson, John Spotswood, explains that he has already published the decisions collected by President Gilmour and President Falconer. He now presents his grandfather's collection, 'which you'll find is a collection of material for a Pandect of the Scots law the author intended, and wou'd have finish'd, had not the Civil Wars and his untimely death marr'd so good an undertaking. My Lord Stair in his book of Institutions of the Laws of Scotland, by his frequent citing of this collection (and he has made more use of it than of others written on the Scots Law) does shew the great esteem he had for it.' [{i}Robert Spottiswoode's collection was indeed frequently cited by President Stair{/i}]
