Cover: the several quires of paper were sewn together. Probably at a later time they were in addition sewn to an envelope, made from paper saec. XVIII exeunte vel XIX ineunte, with five stitches of thread of which the three upper ones are still in function. The fourth thread is also extant, but it is broken

Watermark: three globes, emblem derived from arms of Genoa - broad cross in oval crowned shield, standing on a circle with letters SA and beneath DP, which stands on another circle holding broad letter I. Held by two winged animals, probably gryphons.

Quires consist of two folded leaves or just one folded leaf. It appears that the scrivener intended to start a new quire for each new date, but he did not always persist in this intent.

Pagination in ink of the colour of the text, from 1 to 73.

Very neat handwriting in light-brown ink. In each item, the beginnings of the sections 'Replyed' (or 'Answered') and 'The Lords fand' are written in larger letters, so that they may easily be seen. Language almost fully anglicised. The handwriting retains only few traces of former Scottish chancery-hand. Only rarely does the letter 'h' descend beneath the line. The letter 's', in contrast, nearly always goes beneath the line and is often written with one loop above the line and another loop beneath the line. The letter 'a' is often written like a chancery-hand 'e', followed by a stroke like a letter 'i'
