  • The Department of Manuscripts ('Otdel rukopisej') of the Russian National Library (RNB) houses more than 1300 different fonds ('Fondy') and collections ('sobranij'), comprising more than 450.000 handwritten items. A survey is given on the department's home page on the internet, http://www.nlr.ru/fonds/manuscripts/ The best-known and most prestigious 'Fondy' came from the former Public Library (= PB) and from the Hermitage (Gosudarstvennyj Ermitaž). The latter collection comprises ca. 50 MSS in Russian, ca. 20 MSS in Greek, ca. 100 MSS in oriental languages and ca. 700 MSS in Latin or French. Most of the Ermitaž MSS and some in the Public Library were bought in 1805 from Pjotr Dubrowskij. His collection largely consisted of MSS from the Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés at Paris which came into Dubrowskij's possession in turmoils of the French Revolution while he was an attaché of the Russian Embassy at Paris, till autumn 1794. About 400 MSS of Saint-Germain-des-Prés had come from the abbey of Corbie (in 1638). Others had come from the abbey of Weissenau. Cf. François, Michel: Pierre Dubrowsky et les manuscrits de Saint-Germain-des-Prés à Leningrad. Revue d'histoire de l'Église de France 43 [n.140] (1957) 333-341. Prof. Anselm Szuromi [Budapest] reported on Ermitaž MSS in his paper at the XIV International Congress of Medieval Canon Law, Toronto 2012.
