  • INDEX OF MANUSCRIPTS in the British Library. [Ten volumes, published in 1985. This is an amalgamated index of all the place names and personal names contained in the indexes to the various catalogues of manuscripts acquired up to the year 1950 (thus up to Addit. 47458 / Egerton 3675). It also includes the entries of the 'woefully inadaequate' index of the catalogues for the Harley, Cotton and Lansdowne series. These three catalogues must thus be perused without help from an index [Index spot checked].

'Instructions for use': The index includes names of persons and places, for MSS acquired up to 1950, only. It cannot be used as a class catalogue. For instance, the keyword 'Law' (in vol. VI) only refers to persons with a surname 'Law' - and not to law as a subject

  • London, BL, online "Archives and Manuscripts Catalogue" [only one spot-check made, for the series of Additional MSS, starting with Add. 19900 and ending with Add. 20000]. [The online catalogue cannot be used as a class catalogue. For instance, a search for the keyword 'Law' swamps the searcher with tens of thousands of informations on persons named 'Law', or items which contain information on or texts from individual law suits or documents]
