Catalogue of books
Author(s):
Catalogue of books in Lord Alva's possession.
Arranged by shelfmarks. Many blank leaves are bound between the written ones, probably to be used for additional entries. Some bear notes about the sales price for the books. The Library was densely filled with Jus Commune literature, also comprising a high percentage of books from Catholic countries. Some MS volumes are interspersed, but not all MSS known to have been owned by Lord Alva appear in this Catalogue.
Lord Alva owned a considerable number of MSS. Many of them regarded subjects outside law. I only list here the legal MSS which caught my eye. I find it particularly remarkable that Lord Alva owned six MSS of medieval canon law. Furthermore, the description 'Leges Saxonicae' probably refers to a copy of the 'Sachsenspiegel', a medieval text of German customary law.
