Formularium - Scottish Styles

Incipit:

  • Ane repledgeatioune. Be it [and then:] kend till all men

Formularium - Scottish Styles .

Old foliation in ink in the upper left corner of leaves, repeated in right upper corner, but there almost illegibly faded. Modern foliation in pencil 1-7, but gave up on old fol. 7 (which would have become modern pencil number 7a) and rather acquiesced in the old numbering.

A very large part of the text fol. 9r-123v is written in homogeneous character and probably by only one scribe, but the first eight items and the last two and some items inbetween were written by other hands. Many styles regard feudal charters of land owners, or ecclesiastical benefices, but there are also many styles for business in the royal Chancery, in particular towards the end. Most texts are in Scots, but some are still in Latin. Having browsed through the volume for quite a while I only found parties' names on fol. 1-7, and no year dates. The datable watermark in the paper fol. 51 ss. suggests that these leaves cannot have been written before 1589 and were probably not written long after that date
