The quhilk day in presens of the Lordis of Counsall underwrittin, videlicet Schir Ritchert Maitland of Lethingtoun, knycht, and Mr. Johnne Maitland of Thirlstane provest of Dunglass, comperit personallie Johnne Symsone, sone laufull to George Symsone, burges of Hadingtoun, of the age of xxii. zeiris or thairby, and produceit the lettre underwrittin, subscrivit be the kingis maiestie and his counsallar his handis, off the quhilk the tenour followis: Rex. Chancellar President and ramanent Lordis of Counsall and Sessioun, we greitt zow weill. Forsamekill as we ar informit that the berar heiroff, Johnne Symsone, is sufficientlie qualefeit for using of the office of notare, be daylie practize thairoff with notaris and utheris our schereff clerkis of Haddingtoun ... And in signe and takin of the said Johnne Symsonis admissioun hes ingrosit his signe and subscriptioune manuale, quhilk he sall use in all tymes cuming in his buik, to remane apud Registrum. And als ingrossit in his awin buik presentlie produceit be him befoir the saidis Lordis, quhilk contenis ane hundreyt fourscoir fyve (...) leyvis, comptant fyvescoir to the hundreyt, quhairoff the first leiff and every tent leiff ar subscreivit with the singne and subscriptioun of Robert Scott, at the command of the saidis Lordis. And the said Johnne obleist him to forme his instrumentis awtenticlie, and insert the samyne in his said buik, and efter the compleitting of the samyne sall produce the same haill wrytting and performit with attentike instrumentis and ane uther new buik to be markit of new at thair commandis, and to tak sic new directionis as thai sall say to his charge. ...
