In the 17th century, the clan Lindsay's branch of the Byres became chiefs of the clan and also obtained the title of Earls of Crawford. Only in the 19th century these titles reverted to the clan's branch to which the two senators John Lindsay Lord Menmuir and David Lindsay Lord Edzell had belonged. The clan chiefs also hold the title of Earls of Balcarres. The lands of Balcarres (= the present seat) were infeft to Lord Menmuir in 1587: see the document here below on fol. 23 ss
