Ordo iudiciorum 'Olim'

Author(s):

  • Otto

Incipit:

  • Olim edebatur actio

Ordo iudiciorum 'Olim' . Penned saec. XII exeunte by the same scribe as pag. 3-123a. The scribe of this MS copied the cited texts from Roman law in their full wording. The Ordo by Otto was widely used in Anglonorman territories. Its copies cite one decretal in exactly the wording as given in the decretal collection 'Appendix' which was compiled in Lincoln.

In the present MS the work is glossed up to pag. 218. Most glosses refer to texts of Roman law which are incorporated verbatim into the text. References also mention civilian authors Bulgarus and Albericus, and they also cite the Decretum Gratiani. Many MSS ascribe the work to an author 'Otto'. The present MS, however, explicitly ascribes it to 'Otto Papiensis'. This might mean the famous Bolognese civilian glossator Otto Papiensis. We know very little about his biography. The possibility that he taught for some years in England, or even in Lincoln, cannot be excluded
